Choose compression based on what must survive
For an email attachment, online application, or learning portal, Balanced is a practical first try. It turns each page into a clear 144 DPI image and recompresses image data.
Choose Smallest file when the upload limit matters more than print sharpness. Choose Preserve PDF features for contracts, forms, links, searchable text, or digitally signed documents.
Exact target sizes cannot be guaranteed: a scanned photo booklet and a text-only invoice contain very different data.

Why is my compressed PDF not much smaller?
Text-only PDFs and files that already contain optimized images have little redundant data. Try a raster preset only if a flattened, image-based result is acceptable.
Are links, forms, and selectable text preserved?
They are preserved in Preserve PDF Features mode. Balanced and Smallest File rebuild each page as an image, so links, forms, signatures, and selectable text are flattened.
